Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is a holistic treatment using  therapeutic essential oils extracted from natural plant matter to promote physical and emotional well being. Combining aromatherapy in a massage or facial enhances the treatment with the oils having an ongoing effect in the body.   Essential oils are absorbed through the skin during massage and also by inhalation through the nose. The oils work directly on the chemistry of the body , via the olfactory, skin and bloodstream.

Aromatherapy is derived from the French word ‘aromtherapie’, which was first coined by French chemist Rene Maurice Gattefosse in the 1930’s. He became fascinated with the therapeutic possibilities of the oils after he burnt his hand in the lab placing it in the nearest liquid which was lavender; this healed his hand quite rapidly and helped prevent scarring.

aromatherapyAromatic oils and plants have been used for thousands of years as incense, perfumes and cosmetics.  Archaeologists have found traces of many plants of known medicinal value in the burial places and living sites of early humans.

Aromatherapy has emerged as one of the most popular complementary therapies in the 21st century with a dramatic rise in popularity throughout the world

Essential oils are highly concentrated aromatic substances.  They are produced by tiny glands in the petals, leaves, stems, bark and wood of many plants and trees.  Once extracted, the chemical constituents of the oil determine its primary therapeutic action.  They have a small, simple lipid molecule that allows them to pass easily through the skin.
